Green Passport

For Professionals in the Field of International Education

The Green Passport Program may be useful to study abroad advisers, directors and administrators in the field of international education, program providers, and/or international education conference organizers by giving you:

a) advice on how to ‘green’ your operations and
b) a tool to educate your students about responsible/sustainable travel principles.

We hope that the GP will also allow professionals in the field to establish a community of people who are interested in these topics. We hope (and expect!) to hear from you with success stories and advice for others on how to go about ‘greening’ all aspects of programming for international education. Contributing to the Forums will probably be the easiest way to do this, though we are also happy to upload useful information to the Resources page.

To this end, please continue reading and visit the other pages under the "Advisors" and "Sharing" tabs (though it may also be helpful to review the "Students" pages). We also suggest that you sign in to create an account so that you can use the Forums, see who else is a member and create a user group for your institution, among other benefits (see below for more info.).

GREENING YOUR OPERATIONS:

On the above mentioned pages you will find many resources to assist you in greening your operations. If you see something missing from this list please let us know.

Please also share your questions and thoughts on the Forums (and feel free to create new ones) and let us know if there are links we should add to the Resources list.

STUDENT EDUCATION:

You can choose to take a more or less active role in encouraging your students to participate in the Green Passport Program. Students can be involved by:

a) letting them know about the program so that they can participate on their own and/or by

b) setting up a User Group** for your institution so that students can participate both individually and as a group. You can also choose to share pre-departure material with them and to actively engage them while abroad and upon re-entry. Please also consider implementing a Global Footprint Grant (see below) for your students, to motivate them to actively think and learn about sustainability while abroad.

Suggestions for Implementation:

a) Pre-departure : Your students can sign up to become Green Passport Holders (either individually or as part of a User Group**) before going abroad by agreeing to the Green Passport Pledge. Please see the Participate page to learn more about how students are being engaged. You may also include the article “Going Global: Sustainable Travel and Study Abroad” in your orientation materials. The article is posted on the Awareness Page for students and a .pdf is available for download here GoingGlobal_for GP.pdf and on the Advisor’s Resources Page. Feel free to email us if you prefer a version in Microsoft Word.

b) While Studying Abroad: Students enact the principles of the Green Passport Pledge and learn about global sustainability issues, perhaps with the assistance of a Global Footprint Grant.

c) Re-Entry: Green Passport Holders returning from abroad are encouraged to advocate and report by helping to educate future study abroad students about the benefits of studying abroad “green” and by helping to coordinate educational events and activities for their campus community related to sustainability in study abroad. We hope you will assist them in doing so. They are also encouraged to share their stories, photos, etc. on the GP website. We also hope that students can be recognized for their commitment and achievements, by for example, being mentioned in campus publications. The GP Program is also working in partnership with the Abroad View Foundation which publishes a bi-annual magazine. Each issue of Abroad View magazine will feature a Green Passport Holder.

In addition, as the Green Passport Program develops we hope to work with socially and environmentally responsible companies that will award Green Passport Holders’ efforts with donations on their behalf that better the environment or local communities abroad. The purpose of this is to recognize students’ efforts while not contributing to the consumption of more material goods.

** User Groups: We recommend setting up a User Group so that you can communicate specifically with your students and build a sense of community among them around issues of global sustainability and responsible travel. This can also provide a useful forum for your group members to communicate with each other. In doing so, we will also be able to see which institutions are participating and you will in turn, be able to see which of your students are participating. Please download the GP_GroupSetUp.pdf for step-by-step instructions on setting up a Green Passport User Group (GP_GroupSetUp.pdf). This PDF also includes a sample letter for informing and inviting your students to become Green Passport Holders.

Global Footprint Grants: Global Footprint Grants have been successfully implemented at Ithaca and Middlebury Colleges. They award students who have a particular interest in a topic related to sustainability to research that topic while studying abroad. For more information to create a GF Grant at your institution, click here.

Once you begin participating in the Green Passport Program , we would value your feedback on any aspect of the program at any time. We are very concerned that the GP be useful to you and that it be both interesting and compelling for students, while also serving to educate and empower them. To this end, we are working on creating more educational, interactive tools and activities for pre-departure, while abroad, and re-entry. Your participation as a professional will be invaluable in helping us develop the program in an even more meaningful way.
